Courage is often misunderstood as the absence of fear. Scripture presents something sturdier: faithful action in the presence of fear because God’s presence is greater than the uncertainty ahead. Joshua was not given a simple assignment. He was stepping into leadership after Moses, facing real opposition, and carrying responsibility for an entire people.
God’s command came with God’s presence
The command to be strong and courageous was not motivational language detached from reality. It rested on a promise: the Lord would be with Joshua wherever he went. Joshua’s confidence did not need to come from believing he was naturally capable of everything ahead. It came from knowing he would not face it alone.
The same distinction matters for us. Biblical courage is not self-hype. It is not pretending a situation is harmless or suppressing every emotion. It is choosing the next obedient step while depending on God.
Courage is usually practiced before it is felt
We often wait to feel ready before beginning. But readiness may come after obedience, not before it. The difficult conversation, the first day of a new habit, the return to church, the request for help, or the decision to start again may still feel uncomfortable when the moment arrives.
Courage can look very small from the outside. It may be opening the Bible after a long absence. It may be admitting that you are struggling. It may be saying yes to a calling while still aware of your limitations.
Do not confuse courage with recklessness
God’s presence does not excuse impulsive decisions or eliminate the need for wisdom. Joshua was also told to remain attentive to God’s instruction. Courage and obedience belong together. A brave step is not automatically a faithful step; it must be shaped by truth, prayer, and wise counsel.
Sometimes courage means moving. Sometimes it means waiting. Sometimes it means setting a boundary, asking forgiveness, or accepting help. The question is not, “What looks bold?” but, “What does faithfulness require here?”
You do not carry tomorrow today
Fear often pulls an entire imagined future into the present. God normally gives enough grace for the step in front of us. You do not need strength for every possible outcome tonight. You need grace to obey in this moment and trust Him with what follows.

- How does God’s presence change the way I view this situation?
A prayer for today
Lord, You know where I feel afraid and inadequate. Keep me from pretending and keep me from retreating. Give me courage shaped by Your Word, wisdom for the next step, and confidence that Your presence does not leave me. Amen.
