What Is the SOAP Bible Study Method?

A warm, Scripture-centered look at the soap bible study method, with honest encouragement and one practical next step for your Rooted 75 journey.

Scripture focusPsalm 119:105

If I’m being honest, there have been times when I opened my Bible and felt like I should understand more than I did. Sometimes the page felt full of life, and other times I had to keep showing up before anything seemed to settle into my heart. God’s Word is not a performance we master. It is a place where we learn who God is, remember what is true, and allow Him to shape the way we live.

Begin with honesty

When we think about the soap bible study method, it helps to separate what is truly faithful from what merely looks impressive. God is often doing His deepest work through choices that seem small: telling the truth, asking for help, returning after a difficult day, or obeying what we already know.

If I’m being honest, I do not always live this out perfectly. I can rush, overthink, compare, or try to carry more than God asked me to carry. That is one reason I believe these conversations matter. We are not gathering because we have already arrived. We are learning to recognize where we are and invite God into it.

Before changing the schedule, making a bigger promise, or criticizing yourself, pause and ask: What is actually happening in my heart? Am I afraid, distracted, exhausted, avoiding something, or expecting perfection? Honest questions create room for a faithful response.

What this can look like in everyday life

the SOAP Bible Study Method becomes meaningful when it moves from an idea into the ordinary parts of our day. You do not need to do everything at once. Start with what is clear and manageable.

  • Write one verse or short passage that stands out.
  • Observe what the passage actually says before applying it.
  • Choose one personal application and close with an honest prayer.

These steps are not a formula for earning God’s approval. They are ways to respond to the grace we have already received. Some days the response will feel strong and focused. Other days it may be a whispered prayer, five honest minutes in Scripture, or the decision to begin again.

Keep Christ at the center

The goal is never to become so focused on the habit, the plan, or the result that we lose sight of Jesus. A practice is helpful when it makes us more attentive to God, more honest about ourselves, and more available to love the people around us.

That also means wisdom matters. Different seasons require different expressions of faithfulness. What is realistic for one person may not be appropriate for another. We can encourage one another without demanding that every journey look exactly the same.

When you feel pressure to prove yourself, return to the heart of Rooted 75: not perfection, but progress; not performance, but relationship; not isolation, but a community learning to keep Christ at the center.
